Steve’s Blog: How Can You Manage e-Mail “Chaos” Effectively?
E-mail does not appear to be going away from what we do in the business world anytime soon; in fact, for some of you it might be your primary (or ONLY) method of communication with the people you work with on a regular basis. I say that because I want you to consider a mindset that says it is beneficial for you to manage your email even more effectively, by establishing a process for managing it on a regular basis. What do I mean by a “regular basis”? I mentioned this in a previous blog:
“Schedule e-mail management sessions (>15 minutes) no more than 3-4 times/day”
Instead of trying to manage your Inbox minute by minute, schedule time to do so. Please note I am NOT saying to not respond to an important email or to not send an important emails throughout the day. I am addressing the fact that it is, in general, more productive/efficient to manage the inbox at a few times during the day and not try to work on the inbox all day long. You can only do so much with the hours you have in the day, and email management can’t be the only thing we do.
