When you use the “Reading Pane” in Outlook to view a preview of an e-mail message while it is selected in your Inbox (or other folder), it will be marked “Read” as soon as you select the next message in the Inbox (folder). You can easily change these settings so the e-mail is not marked “Read” until you open it full screen.
